Councilmember Harris-Dawson is supporting safe and thriving neighborhoods by focusing on crime prevention, and building robust partnerships with law enforcement, community organizations and social service providers to improve public safety.
- September 2015: The councilmember introduces a motion calling for collaborative, coordinated efforts using the resources of the City, the Mayor’s office, and community and nonprofit organizations to analyze and reevaluate the current public safety approaches following a surge in homicides.
- March 2017: Councilmember Harris-Dawson brings the Community Safety Partnership to Harvard Park to improve relationships between police and residents to increase public safety by taking a successful model introduced in the housing projects and implementing them in a neighborhood.
- November 2018: The Harvard Park Community Safety Partnership received a commendation at City Hall for reducing violent crime and crimes overall in the Harvard Park area. There were no homicides in the reporting period.
- April 2019: Councilmember introduces policy to respond to the increase of shootings in the first four months of 2019 including Nipsey Hussle’s
- June 2019: The Community Safety Initiative, a $1 Million investment in community based violence prevention and response.
- Adds safe passages community organizations to address public safety concerns without over-policing communities
- Deploys mental health services to support neighborhoods dealing with trauma through Healing Circles
- Produces entrepreneurship workshop across South LA for youth and young adults
- Activates Community Intervention Workers to disrupt and de-escalate violent conflict
- October 2019: Community Safety Initiative supporters and participants were honored for their work to stem the rise in violence and support South LA communities
